My first attempt at a braid design solution uses Microsoft PowerPoint. It
consisted of a workbook, with each page containing a different braid design. The braid is
represented by a series of polygons, each of which represents the appearance of a
particular thread. All appearances of the thread from a given tama a linked into a group.
There is a koma set up diagram, and each tama shown in this set up diagram is grouped with
its associated thread appearances. To design the braid, simply change the colours of the
tama. This workbook includes 6 basic braids together with the more complex single

Cybraid is written in Microsoft Visual Basic and is only available to run
on Microsoft Windows platforms. It is a small .EXE file of 64kbytes and requires no
installation. Simply download the file and double click it from windows explorer to run it
(or create a short cut icon for your desk top). It can design odd bobbin (symettric)
braids in plain weave, 2-2 twill, 3-3 twill and 4-4 twill. It can also design even bobbin
(asymmetric) braids with left, right or centre modification.

A key issue with Cybraid is that it only runs on Microsoft Windows.Many
braiders have told me that they would like to use the software, but are Mac users. I have
therefore decided to redevelop the software using JAVA, which will allow it to be used on
Windows, Mac, Linux and Unix PCs. Cybraid 2 Alpha release is now available. This has
similar functionality to Cybraid 1, but please note that I have not yet implemented the
ability to save and load designs from file. The software has evolved so that it can design
wider braids that you might make on a large takadai. Work has also been done in
preparation for designing double cloth braids e.g. kikko braids. The software is
distributed as a single JAR file. This release has been tested successfully on Windows,
Mac and Linux PCs.
For this version of Cybraid, I am also making the source code available - so if enjoy
programming as well as braiding., feel free to improve on my efforts!
